Key findings:

  • Forest fires increased exponentially in August and September.
  • Forest fires had a higher occurrence on weekends then weekdays.
  • Montesinho Natural Park went through a severe drought from 2000-2003.
  • High humidity in the month of January increased FFMC levels.
  • Lack of rain from 2000-2003 contributed to the increase of DMC and DC.
  • The region with the highest frequency of fires also had high levels of FFMC, DMC and DC levels.

Suggestions to prevent forest fires if weather and fuel conditions are similar to Montesinho Natural Park:

  • Limit public access to regions with high FFMC, DMC and DC levels.
  • Irrigate regions to increase moisture and reduce fuel levels.
